The Special Committee on Democratic and Electoral Reform is accepting written submissions about democratic engagement, voter participation and models for electing MLAs.

The Special Committee on Democratic and Electoral Reform, which includes MLAs from all recognized parties in the legislative assembly, was appointed in April 2025.

There are two parts to the committee’s mandate. The first part is to examine democratic engagement, voter participation and models for electing MLAs. The second part is to review the administration of the 2024 provincial general election.

“The committee has a broad mandate to examine opportunities for strengthening our democracy,” said committee chair Jessie Sunner, MLA for Surrey-Newton. “We are looking forward to hearing directly from British Columbians on their views and ideas.”

“The participation of British Columbians is critical to our work,” said Ward Stamer, deputy chair and MLA for Kamloops-North Thompson. “The input we receive will be carefully considered and inform our discussions and recommendations for potential changes.”

The current call for written input is in relation to the first part of the committee’s mandate. Public hearings for those who previously registered will be held beginning Monday, July 7. The committee will be considering all input and issuing a report to the legislative assembly with recommendations on this part of its mandate by Nov. 26.

Those interested in participating are invited to make a written submission by Friday, July 25, at 3 p.m. (Mountain time) here.

The members of the committee are:

* Rob Botterell, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands;

* Amna Shah, MLA for Surrey City Centre; and

* Qwulti’stunaat/Debra Toporowski, MLA for Cowichan Valley.
