Gary David Smith
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gary David Smith, who left us on June 11, 2025, in Cranbrook, British Columbia. Born on May 3, 1946, in Pine Falls, Manitoba, Gary lived a life full of stories, service, laughter, and love.
Gary was one of ten spirited children raised on Creston Street in Kimberley. Known in his early years as “Eddie Haskel” — a nod to the mischievous charm of the character from Leave it to Beaver — and later affectionately called “Smitty,” Gary’s love of sports and physical activity followed him throughout life. He was an avid baseball player and swimmer, and he shared his passion by teaching gymnastics and trampoline acrobatics to many.
At 17, Gary joined the Royal Canadian Navy, launching a journey that took him around the world. While serving aboard ship, he earned a steam ticket and developed skills that would define his professional career. Upon his return home, he worked at Cominco and earned his millwright trade ticket. Never one to stop learning, Gary completed numerous apprenticeships and certifications over the years, including a BC Trade Electrical Class A ticket, believing deeply in the value of education.
His career spanned roles that reflected his expertise and leadership, including instructing at Kwantlen College, managing maintenance operations at Delta Smelting, Tetra Pak, Coca-Cola, and ultimately retiring as Electrical Maintenance Foreman at Neptune Bulk Terminals in North Vancouver.
Gary was a proud and active member of the Royal Canadian Legion for more than 50 years, a place where he felt at home swapping stories and being part of a community that shared his values of service and camaraderie.
He is lovingly remembered by his daughters Traci Rankin and Suzi McClelland (Derek). Gary’s family was the light of his life. He never missed a chance to tell anyone about granddaughter Sydney’s incredible art and compassionate heart. He lit up whenever he spoke about his grandsons, Jake and Kieran. He would boast about Jake’s memory for hockey stats and academic excellence, and Kieran’s sharp wit and impressive grades. He was their proud Poppa, a bringer of the best treats and best tales.
Gary’s legacy lives on in his daughters’ inherited love for storytelling and playful nicknames — his unmistakable “Smitty’isms.” His grandchildren will carry forward his zest for life, humour, and proud devotion to family.
Gary will also be lovingly remembered by his siblings Elaine, Joel, Doug (Lucille), Les (Ann), Barb (Bob), Bobby, Jimmy , Richard.
Gary was predeceased by his beloved parents, Lillian and Kenneth Smith, whose memory he honoured in his own life of dedication and hard work. He was also predeceasd by his sister Peggy and brother in-law Don
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 9th at Gary’s favourite place — the Cabin at Findlay Creek. Family and friends are warmly invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate a life well-lived. If you plan to attend the Celebration of Life for Gary, the family kindly requests that you RSVP to [email protected].
In lieu of flowers, donations in Gary’s name can be made to the SPCA or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
