Obituary of John Edward Scanland
With love in our hearts and tears in our eyes, we are deeply saddened to announce the passing of a great man, John Edward Scanland, who peacefully left this world with his family by his side on August 29th 2025.
John is predeceased by sons Brian and Robert, and parents John and Marion. He leaves behind his loving wife of over 63 years, Darlene; daughters Debbie (Lindsay) and Judy (Butch); son John; granddaughters Jamie (Joe), Ashley (Kevin), and Jodie (Tamara); grandson Matthew; and great-grandsons Slade and Jace; sisters Marion (Frank), Catherine (Ed), and Ruth (Dom)
John lived a life defined by hard work, loyalty, and devotion to his family. He will be remembered for many things—his deep knowledge of and dedication to civil construction, his years spent playing fastball, and, of course, his enduring passion for golf. (Just to name a few)
John’s love for his family was unwavering, and each of them carries forward a part of him wether it be his strength, wit, or resilience. John will be remembered not only for his passion for golf, often spending hours perfecting his swing or enjoying a round with friends and family. But also for his lifelong commitment to honest, hard work. He believed in doing things right, no matter how big or small the task, and he instilled that same ethic in those who knew and loved him.
To his family, John was more than a husband, father, and grandfather—he was a source of wisdom, encouragement, and laughter. “Big Bad John,” as he was affectionately known as, was larger than life in the eyes of those who loved and or respected him. Whether sharing a story, singing with his family or offering a helping hand, with a warm presence, John had a way of making people feel cared for and valued.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Shaun Van Zyl and the oncology teams in Kelowna and Cranbrook for their exceptional care and compassion throughout the years of John’s illness. Their kindness and dedication brought comfort not only to John but to all who loved him. The family is deeply grateful to Dr. Kevin McIver for his kindness and support during John’s final moments.
Though his absence leaves a deep void, John’s legacy will live on in the lessons he taught, the love he gave, and the many, many memories he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed, but forever remembered with love and gratitude.
A Celebration of John’s Life will be announced once arrangements are finalized.
