Toby Benches fuel reduction project set

The Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District’s Wildfire Risk Reduction team will soon start a wildfire fuel reduction project in the Toby Benches.

The work is anticipated to continue until the spring of 2026.

The treatment area consists of 47.9 hectares on Toby Benches, west of Invermere.

Crews will remove accumulations of surface fuels and widen spacing between the trees by removing smaller stems, ladder fuels, and danger trees. There will be heavy equipment on site (feller-buncher, skidder, forwarder, chipper, chip trucks), the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) reported Nov. 14.

The work times will run from 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. Please respect the crew’s signage and active work areas.

All fibre materials gathered will be utilized at the Skookumchuk Pulp Mill.

The overall goal of the wildfire risk reduction effort is to lower fire intensities and the rate of spread to allow for a successful suppression, not eliminating the probability and cause of ignition. This helps to enhance community resiliency, emergency response, and public safety.

Please note that this is not a RDEK project. If you have questions related to this work, please contact [email protected].
