Local man killed in mining incident
Authorities are investigating after an Elk Valley man has been located deceased at a local coal mine.
On November 20, at approximately 7 a.m., Elk Valley Regional RCMP was made aware of a mining incident at the Elk View Operations in Sparwood.
It was reported that one man, a 39-year-old resident of Hosmer, had been reported missing on site and that the Elk Valley Resources (EVR) Mine Rescue teams were leading a search of the mine property involved in the incident.
RCMP assisted with the initial investigation and remained in contact with our EVR liaison contacts during the search.
As of this morning, November 21, Elk Valley RCMP can confirm that a contractor working on site has died and his remains have been recovered.
The BC Coroner’s Office is currently on scene along with the RCMP. The Ministry of Mining was also notified and will be attending to complete their investigation, working with the BC Coroner Service and the Elk Valley RCMP.
Next of Kin notification was completed by RCMP officers this morning with EVR management in support.
Elk Valley Regional RCMP offer their sincere condolences to the family, friends and fellow co-workers of the deceased. At this time, the name of the deceased will not be released.
We are deeply saddened to confirm that a contractor employee has died following an incident that occurred during maintenance work on November 19, at our Elkview Operations, Elk Valley Resources stated.
“Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the family, friends, and colleagues of this person. This is an incredibly difficult time for our Elkview Operations workforce, and we are ensuring support services and counselling are available,” said Mike Carrucan, CEO, EVR.
“Regulatory agencies and authorities have been notified, and we are undertaking a full investigation into the incident.”
District of Sparwood Mayor David Wilks offered condolences on social media this morning.
“Mayor and council along with all staff and employees for the District of Sparwood extend our deepest condolences to the family and co-workers affected by this terrible incident. We would like to thank Mine Rescue as well as emergency personnel for their efforts under extremely difficult conditions,” he said.
