Utilities fees increase aims to keep up with rising costs

The City of Cranbrook is proposing small increases to water, sewer, and solid waste utility fees in 2026 in order to keep up with inflation and cover rising regional landfill costs.

City council Dec. 8 gave three readings to the Waterworks Amendment Bylaw, the Sanitary Sewer Rates Amendment Bylaw, and the Solid Waste and Recycling Collection and Disposal Amendment Bylaw to consider these utility rate increases.

If adopted by council, these changes would mean an extra $4.00 per month per household increasing the total monthly utility charge from $69.50 to $73.50.

Water rates would see a small increase of $.50 cents per month, bringing the fee to $27 — the first adjustment since 2022. Sanitary sewer fees would rise by $1 per month to $24. Solid waste fees would increase slightly as well with collection moving to $10.50 and landfill to $12 to reflect rising regional landfill costs.

Utility bills will continue to be sent out three times per year – the end of March, the end of July and the end of November 2026.

The city will continue to offer a five per cent discount for those who prepay their utilities for the entire year prior to April 30, 2026.
