Elaine Johnson (Smitten)
February 1, 1946 – August 6, 2026
On August 6th, 2026, Elaine crossed peacefully to the ancestral side of the river, carried by the love of family and friends.
She lived her 80-year-long life with a loving heart, resourcefulness and a spirit of adventure.
Born to Leslie and Esther Smitten, she spent a joyful childhood in Rossland, British Columbia, alongside her siblings Nuala, Shane and Miles. The mountains and lakes of her early years shaped her lifelong love of the outdoors and her quiet strength.
In 1969, she married Dale Johnson, beginning a partnership that lasted a lifetime. They created a family underpinned by love, resilience and shared curiosity about the world. She was a devoted and proud mother to Cara and Niall, and her beloved grandson, Rane, brought her immense joy.
She believed deeply in the potential of every person. After earning her teaching degree at the University of British Columbia and later earning special education credentials at the University of Victoria, she dedicated her career to children with multiple, severe disabilities through the Calgary Board of Education. Her compassion, patience and steady leadership changed disadvantaged young lives in profound ways.
Elaine embraced the world. She travelled widely and lived for periods in the Netherlands, the British Isles and Hong Kong. Some of her happiest times were spent at the family cottage in the Columbia Valley, where she and Dale retired in 2007 and where family memories were woven into the landscape she cherished.
She was calm and organized in moments of crisis, and she received a formal RCMP commendation for saving the life of a man who had fallen through lake ice. She was a loyal friend, a dedicated volunteer, and her presence projected steadiness and warmth. She loved books and gardens, sewing and home design, golf and cycling, snow sports and backcountry hiking.
She is survived by her loving husband Dale; daughter Cara (Puneet); son Niall (Erin, Taylor, James); grandson Rane; sister Nuala (Lindy); brother Miles (Zoe), and several close nieces and nephews.
In keeping with her wishes, there will not be a formal memorial service. A gathering of close family and friends to honour her life and legacy will be arranged in due course.
