RDEK provides update on Cokato Road mudslides

Following up on some inquiries we have received, the East Kootenay Emergency Management Program has been in regular contact with the Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MOTT) regarding the mudslides on Cokato Road.

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has been advised by MOTT that the two mudslides on Cokato Road have been assessed by Geotechnical Engineers and have been deemed safe.

The assessment did not find any major concerns and concluded that the mud slides were caused by oversaturation of the ground. There is no immediate risk to public safety.

Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for the East Kootenay and the Elk Valley that stretches into today (Dec. 17).

A vigorous cold front moved across the B.C. interior last night. In the wake of the front, strong southwesterly wind gusts will develop over these regions on Wednesday morning.

These strong winds may lead to possible tree damages, local power outages and travel delay.

Winds will ease late Wednesday afternoon or early Wednesday evening as the front tracks eastward.

More details on this Special Weather Statement can be found here.
