December in the East Kootenay
December is the hardest month to get out and about in the East Kootenay.
The onset of winter and less-than-desirable road conditions, mixed with drivers failing to remember that the white and hard, transparent stuff are slippery and don’t adjust their speed accordingly, make for more decisions along the line of “ah screw it – next time.”
The decline of available day light and the often cloudy and snowy skies also combine to reduce a shooter’s production, especially when one is trying to capture images that portray the beauty and grandeur of our region.
So, with the wide angle dismayed, one turns to the capturing of images that detail the small stuff and symbolic.
December in the East Kootenay is a time when a large percentage of residents, who in many ways personify the spirit of the people living here, head up into the mountains for some serious shredding and sledding, and it is a time of family gatherings and parties.
With near record or actual record snowfall in many areas, it’s appearing as though the winter of 2012/2013 presents potential to be ‘epic.’
May you enjoy winter’s recreational bounty and may you play safely enough to get home in one piece.
All the best of the holiday season and Happy New Year!
The images captured this month are from, primarily, the Cranbrook area. As I said, we didn’t get out much this past month. There are also images of Invermere at night, Radium Hot Springs, the Newgate/Jaffray area and Fort Steele area.
Our lead image, of a fiery Marysville sunset, is by Jim Webster. We encourage people who have a love for photography and who capture interesting and beautiful images to submit them to e-KNOW and we will include them in our monthly ‘In the East Kootenay’ features. Provide a few details as to when and where the photo was taken and any other pertinent information and help us create our monthly tapestries of one of the most spectacular and soul-stirring natural paradises in the world.
Send your images, preferably good sized (200 to 400 Jpegs) to: [email protected].
Cheers and happy shooting in 2013!
