Variety of infractions covered by new bylaw

The Regional District of East Kootenay’s (RDEK) Bylaw Enforcement Notice Bylaw is now in effect, allowing compliance officers to issue fines to a maximum of $500, as per the Bylaw Notice Enforcement Act, for a variety of bylaw contraventions, including noise, illegal campgrounds, dog control, building bylaws, and more.

Aside from short-term rental use, the RDEK’s primary enforcement objective is voluntary compliance, so fines will not be the primary means of enforcement. The intention is to pursue compliance with the same approach as has been traditionally undertaken.

In November, RDEK Compliance Officers were provided with access to the province’s Short-Term Rental Data Registry.

Currently, the RDEK Compliance Officers are forwarding requests to the province to cease providing platform services for short-term rentals that are operating without an approved Temporary Use Permit.
