41st annual Bonspiel on the Lake hurried hard

By Bram Rossman

It couldn’t be more Canadian.

The 41st annual Bonspiel on the Lake took place January 16,17 and 18, on a freshly frozen Lake Windermere.

Hosted by the Invermere Curling Club, the outdoor event managed to land right where it belongs —just offshore from Kinsmen Beach— despite some nervous anticipation.

In a winter that has brought heavy snowfall to the mountain peaks, the valley bottom has been wet and warm.

To the great delight of 64 curling teams, however, the temperatures turned just in time.

Aided by a Herculean volunteer effort, Taynton Bay was transformed into an outdoor curling rink for the weekend.

Pictured, teams played well into the night under the twinkling lights as the Canada Flag gently flapped in the breeze. The natural ice made interesting patterns and created an ongoing challenge for the players.
