District of Elkford updating ORV Bylaw
In collaboration with, and with the support of local partners including the Elkford ATV Club, Elkford Snowmobile Association, ATVBC and the RCMP, the District of Elkford is proposing updates to its Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Bylaw to align with current legislation, support responsible, accessible recreation, and expand trail access to encourage tourism in our community.
The existing bylaw, adopted in 2006, predates the BC Off-Road Vehicle Act. Under the Act, any on-highway (public road) operation requires a police-issued operation permit obtained from the police department or detachment nearest to where an ORV will be operated.
The proposed 2024 update removes the requirement to additionally purchase a permit from the district, brings the bylaw in line with statutory requirements, and ensures consistency with all current legislation.
All discussions and decisions on this matter have taken place during open council meetings.
The bylaw is expected to come forward for consideration of adoption at the April 13, regular council meeting at 6 p.m.
Council meetings are open to the public and can be attended:
- In person at District Hall
- Online via Zoom
- Live or anytime on YouTube.
