Electoral Area C Volunteer of the Year recognized

Jo-Anne Takala has been recognized as the 2026 Electoral Area C Volunteer of the Year for her generous contribution of time and energy to the region.

“Jo-Anne has been a driving force behind numerous community projects, most notably her long-standing and tireless work at the Wardner Community Hall. As the primary organizer for the hall for many years, Jo-Anne has been instrumental in transforming it into a vibrant, well-managed, and welcoming space,” said Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Electoral Area C Director Rob Gay.

“Through her leadership and dedication, the community hall has become both a cornerstone of community life and a significant revenue generator supporting Wardner’s sustainability.”

In addition to her ongoing work at the hall, Takala has taken on a key organizing role in the Wardner Park Upgrade, a major community initiative supported by the Columbia Basin Trust.

She also dedicates significant time to supporting provincial and federal elections, and consistently supports community members during difficult times, including preparing and delivering meals and offering personal support.

“Collectively, Jo-Anne invests hundreds of volunteer hours each year, and she has done so selflessly and consistently for many years. Her leadership is trusted, her efforts are deeply felt, and her presence strengthens the fabric of Wardner and Area C,” added Gay.

Takala was recognized at a Volunteer of the Year celebration held Monday night in Wardner.
