Cranbrook RCMP delivers Q1 report to council
The senior leadership team of Cranbrook RCMP appeared as a delegation to City of Cranbrook council Monday night to provide the local detachment’s 2026 first quarter report (Q1).
In Q1 (January to March 2026), Cranbrook RCMP received 2,087 reports to police, slight increase from 2,003 the previous quarter.
Members responded to 132 mental health files (down from 180 in the previous quarter), submitted 84 Reports to Crown Counsel recommending charges and conducted 26 curfew checks of persons on conditions.
Cranbrook members also continued to focus on traffic initiatives, issuing 20 provincial roadside prohibitions for impaired driving, which results in immediate driver’s license suspension and the offender’s vehicle being towed.
Some metrics provided to council by the Cranbrook RCMP highlighted an increase in some offences, most notably break and enters to businesses and mischief under $5,000.
Cranbrook detachment conducted a number of proactive policing and crime reduction initiatives, including:
- 16 joint patrols with City of Cranbrook Bylaw Officers;
- Routine foot patrols throughout the community, including the downtown core, industrial area, Tamarack Mall and Memorial Arena;
- Delivered 12 school presentations and 2 crime prevention presentations to the community;
- Conducted 62 school visits to engage with youth;
- 12 foot patrols and bar walks in the downtown core.
Cranbrook RCMP also highlighted a few noteworthy files to council:
- In spring 2023, Cranbrook RCMP’s General Investigation Unit ran an undercover investigation into local drug trafficking. That work led to charges against four people, and one of the suspects was sentenced to four years in jail on six offences and given a lifetime ban on owning firearms. The case was complex and took more than 18 months to investigate and prepare before moving through the court process.
- Cranbrook RCMP’s GIS Unit led a 2020 homicide investigation that ultimately resulted in a guilty plea to manslaughter. The investigation was detailed and resource-intensive, taking almost two years to complete disclosure to Crown Counsel, followed by about four more years before sentencing was finalized through the guilty plea.
- In 2024, Cranbrook RCMP’s Enhanced Response Unit, with support from General Duty members, carried out a search that resulted in the seizure of about six kilograms of drugs.
Testing confirmed the substances included methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine, ketamine, MDMA, GHB, and DMT, with an estimated street value of more than $522,000. The file took months of investigative work and support from specialists, and after about 1.5 years in court, it concluded with sentencing in January 2026, when the accused received a seven-year federal jail sentence.
“These investigations were complex and required significant time and resources, but they were essential to ensuring community safety. This outcome reflects our commitment to holding individuals accountable and ensuring the safety of our community,” said Sgt. Stu Hert, Operations Officer at the Cranbrook Detachment.
“We are continuing to focus on proactive policing initiatives, such as community patrols, to remain present, engaged, and responsive. By increasing patrols and early intervention, we’re working to enhance safety and address concerns before they become larger problems.”
