Obituray of Herbert Gary Janzen
Herbert (“Herb”) Gary Janzen
September 12, 1947 – May 9, 2026
Our beloved Herbert Janzen passed away suddenly on May 9th, 2026 at the age of 78.
Herb was born on the family homestead in Sexsmith Alberta to Henry and Janet Janzen. It was here that Herb was introduced to a life of hard work and horses. After the family relocated to Abbotsford, BC Herb found his way in the world and to the love of his life, Barbara (Hawkes). Herb and Barb later moved one more time to their forever home in the Kootenays. Herb always said he lived in the best place on earth and truly believed he lived in “God’s Country”.
Herb built his home and farm with his wife and son Gary piece by piece. Anyone who was lucky enough to visit their home knew it was a labour of love and a testament to his hardworking personality. It was from here he was able to set off on many back country adventures. On the back of his mules and horses was where he felt connected to the land. Herb was deeply spiritual and felt the mountains were his church.
Herb was community minded and had a volunteering spirit. He was involved in a great number of local groups and initiatives. He was a proud founding member of the Kootenay Backcountry Horsemen. A group that would help him forge life long friendships and adventures in the great outdoors.
Herb was predeceased by his Father Henry Janzen, Step Mother Kathy Janzen, Mother Janet Simpson. Herb is survived by his loving wife Barb (Hawkes), Son Gary (Crystal) and Granddaughter Hannah.
