Expect delays on national park highway this summer

Construction season is coming to Kootenay National Park (KNP) with bridge rehabilitation and culver repairs planned for Highway 93.

As early as June 1, three separate highway projects will begin on Highway 93S in KNP.

The Sinclair Canyon Bridge Rehabilitation will snarl traffic near Radium Hot Springs.

The project (map above) will address critical infrastructure upgrades and include repairs to the Sinclair Creek Rock Tunnel near the Radium Hot Springs pools and retaining wall rehabilitation at the southwest end of Sinclair Canyon.

The Kootenay Crossing bridge rehabilitation work will address critical infrastructure repairs.

And culvert repairs at km 27.5 will address infrastructure repairs.

Be prepared for traffic delays, budget extra time and be patient during this construction period.

Motorists should expect single lane alternating traffic and delays up to 45 minutes during peak traffic periods. This work will be underway from June – October.

Check DriveBC (DriveBC.ca) for current conditions. Parks Canada will be making every effort to minimize disruptions and maintain safe access through the area.

There are ‘no’ planned disruptions to access for the Radium Hot Springs pools or Redstreak Campground during construction. The Sinclair Canyon Trail/Juniper Trail will also remain open.

The following pedestrian trails and pullouts will close during construction:

– Pedestrian sidewalks on both sides of Highway 93S through Sinclair Canyon;

– Bunkhouse area near old West Gate;

– Southbound parking area immediately north of Sinclair Canyon; and

– Northbound parking area approximately 150m north of Sinclair Canyon.
