Invasive and noxious weed spraying to begin

Over the coming weeks, the City of Fernie’s contractor will be spraying invasive and noxious weeds in identified priority areas across the city.

Invasive and noxious weeds are all around the East Kootenay and pose a threat to wildlife, the environment, and recreational areas. Under the Province’s Weed Control Act, the city is responsible for treating and preventing noxious and invasive weeds on public land within city limits.

What to expect:

Surveying of treatment areas has started and will continue throughout the summer.

On-the-ground treatment is scheduled to begin in Fernie on May 29, weather pending.

Treatment areas will be finalized and prioritized based on the type and severity of infestation.

All priority areas being treated this year will be signed 48 hours in advance following the regulations set out in the city’s Pesticide Use Control Bylaw.

You can learn more about the Invasive Plant Management Program, and how you can help stop the spread of invasive plants on the city website.
