Severe thunderstorm alert for most of region
Environment Canada this afternoon issued a (yellow watch) severe thunderstorm alert for most of East Kootenay.
“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. There is also a chance of a funnel cloud this evening,” Environment Canada stated.
The watch covers the Cranbrook/South Country, Elk Valley and Kimberley areas. At this time the Columbia Valley is not included in the alert, though there is a chance of thunderstorms there as well.
“Driving conditions may be difficult. Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible,” Environment Canada said.
“When thunder roars, go indoors! Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.”
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain.
