Trails Alliance reports Ammonite Trail is open
The Fernie Trails Alliance has completed trail building and new wayfinding signage to restore access to Fernie’s incredible ammonite fossil following logging in the area.
The route begins at the Castle Mountain parking lot off Coal Creek Road. From there, the Ammonite Access Trail takes you approximately three km to the start of the Ammonite Hiking Trail.
The access trail can be ridden or hiked, but the final section to the fossil is hiking only.
The trail leads to an incredible 1.4-metre ammonite fossil, offering a glimpse into the ancient world that once existed here.
The trail follows through cutblocks and some forest before entering a creek drainage. Climbing up this drainage to the fossil will be extremely difficult or impassable at higher water levels. Please use caution and plan accordingly.
It is an eight km round trip, with moderate difficulty. Anticipate a two-to-three hour trip.
The Ammonite Trail is part of the BC Paleo Trail, bringing paleontological history to life through interpretation, education, and interactive activities in Fernie, Sparwood, and Cranbrook.
