A couple of permanent traffic changes in downtown Cranbrook are being made on Monday, August 18, to help keep vehicles, pedestrians and local businesses moving safely.

The intersections of Baker Street and 12th Avenue, along with Baker Lane at 13th Avenue South will become four-way stops.

These permanent changes stem from recommendations of the City’s Traffic Safety Committee made up of members of the Cranbrook RCMP, Bylaw Services, Engineering and Public Works.

Baker Street and 12th Avenue (pictured above)

Public Works will be installing a new stop sign on Baker Street, in front of Talaria Footwear, making this intersection a full four-way stop. Stop signs remain in place on the other three corners on 12th Avenue and coming out of the Safeway parking lot onto Baker Street.

Baker Lane and 13th Avenue South

Public Works will also be installing two new stop signs on Baker Lane – one in front of Mad Lillies and on the opposite side of Baker Lane at the turn into the Safeway parking lot.

All drivers are asked to please use caution and care when approaching or using these intersections for the next several months. There is always an adjustment period for drivers when new traffic pattern changes are made. Help keep our roads safe by driving safe.

Remember that at a four-way stop, the first vehicle to come to a complete stop is the first to go. If two vehicles arrive at the same time, the driver on the right goes first. If two vehicles are facing each other and arrive at about the same time, the driver turning left should yield to the vehicle going straight through.
