Locals to be enshrined in Canadian Ski Hall of Fame

Heiko and Linda Socher, keystones of the Elk Valley skiing culture, have been installed in the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame.

The Canadian Ski Hall of Fame (CSHF) is a non-profit organization founded in 1982 to honour the accomplishments of pioneers, competitors, coaches and visionaries in skiing and snowboarding.

Linda and Heiko Socher

“Heiko and Linda Socher are the foundational builders of Fernie Alpine Resort and of the ski culture that defines the Elk Valley,” CSHF noted.

“Over 25 years beginning in 1973, Heiko led the transformation of a 30,000-visit community hill into a 220,000-visit globally recognized powder destination constructing three chairlifts, engaging international planners, and creating the “Griz” mascot that became the official symbol of the City of Fernie.

“Linda simultaneously built the entire commercial and instructional infrastructure: founding Fernie’s first ski shop (The Ski Base, 1968), establishing the first ski school, certifying as a CSIA instructor, running 30 years of elementary school lessons, and serving as an official Alpine Canada retailer,” CSHF said.

“Their combined work raised a son to the 1994 Canadian Olympic team and double national downhill title.

“Post-sale, Heiko, in his 70s, personally constructed Heiko’s Trail, a 25-km alpine route that is now a landmark of the Fernie backcountry. Linda, at 88, still skis 100 days per year.

“The Mayor of Fernie, a BC Sports Hall of Fame member, and a former Alpine Canada Chairperson all offer unequivocal endorsement. Together, Heiko and Linda Socher built a world-class ski destination from the ground up, leading to the rise of an iconic Canadian mountain community.”

Another 2026 Ski Hall of Fame inductee has called Invermere home since starring for Alpine Canada.

Manuel “Manny” Osborne-Paradis stands among Canada’s most accomplished alpine ski racers, with three World Cup wins, 11 podiums, a World Championship bronze medal in super-G, and four Olympic Games across a 16-season career,” CSHF stated.

“His resilience through multiple catastrophic injuries each time fighting back to the world stage defines his athletic character as much as his results. As a founding member of the iconic Canadian Cowboys generation, he helped shape a golden era of Canadian men’s speed skiing that inspired the athletes who followed.

“What elevates his candidacy beyond his competitive record is a sustained, genuine commitment to giving back. Co-founding the Mike and Manny Ski Camp in 2007 with Michael Janyk, he raised over $300,000 to support more than 200 financially disadvantaged young athletes producing measurable returns in the next generation of World Cup competitors.”
