Two wildfires out-of-control in region

BC Wildfire Service this afternoon (August 21) reports two wildfires burning out-of-control in the East Kootenay – both in the Columbia Valley area.

The Jumbo Creek (N21071) fire, about 18 km southwest of Panorama Mountain Village, discovered July 20, is 1,136 hectares.

The lightning-caused wildfire is burning in “challenging terrain, where direct suppression activities would provide limited operational benefit while exposing firefighters to unnecessary risk. This incident is not threatening structures or critical infrastructure at this time. As temperatures rise throughout the day, more smoke may be visible as fire activity naturally increases with daytime heating,” BC Wildfire Service stated.

This wildfire continues to be regularly monitored by frequent flights, and a remote camera has been installed.

The Moose Creek (N41514) wildfire, discovered August 9 about 14 km northeast of Harrogate, is out-of-Control at 332 ha.

There are seven other fires in the East Kootenay that are being held or are under control.
