Cranbrook RCMP Acting Detachment Commander Staff Sergeant Darren Kakuno appeared as a delegation to City of Cranbrook council Monday night, to provide the Cranbrook RCMP Detachment’s 2026 Q2 report.

In Q2 of 2026 (April to June), Cranbrook RCMP received 2,201 reports to police, an increase from 2,087 the previous quarter; 667 reports were criminal code offences. Cranbrook members responded to 173 mental health files (up from 132 in the previous quarter) and submitted 71 Reports to Crown Counsel recommending charges.

Cranbrook members continued to focus on traffic initiatives, issuing 43 traffic tickets and 16 provincial roadside prohibitions for impaired driving, which results in immediate driver’s license suspension and the offender’s vehicle being towed.

Cranbrook RCMP provided council the following metrics which showed an increase in some offences, including thefts and mischief:

Cranbrook detachment also conducted a number of proactive policing and crime reduction initiatives, including:

• 36 joint patrols with City of Cranbrook Bylaw Officers;
• Routine foot patrols throughout the community, including the downtown core, Industrial Rd area, Tamarack Mall and Memorial Arena;
• Delivered four crime prevention presentations to the community;
• 12 foot patrols and Bar Walks in the downtown core.

Community engagement remained a significant focus of the detachment’s work during Q2. Cranbrook RCMP participated in 10 community events, hosted two Coffee with a Cop events in May, providing residents with an opportunity to share concerns and discuss policing priorities.

Feedback gathered through these events helped inform the detachment’s strategic planning process. Community Policing members also conducted downtown business drop-ins, connecting with business owners to discuss crime prevention and emerging safety concerns.

A strategic planning session was held with city and a council representative to identify priorities, opportunities and strategic direction for the Cranbrook RCMP. A draft strategic plan has now been developed and is undergoing review with staff and members at the detachment.

The process provides an opportunity to consider current community priorities while identifying areas of focus to guide the detachment’s work going forward.

The Cranbrook RCMP says continued collaboration with residents, businesses, community organizations, the City of Cranbrook, and Bylaw Services remains an important part of its approach to community safety.

The Cranbrook RCMP will continue its focus on proactive policing, crime prevention, community engagement, and partnerships throughout the remainder of 2026.
