Local brings home nine medals from B.C. 55+ Games
By Joyce Green
The 2026 B.C. 55+ Games were recently held in Kamloops with over 2,900 participants and supporters from across B.C. and the Yukon taking part in more than 25 various sports and activities.
Jim Johnson, President of Zone 7, is pleased to report that 73 people from this zone attended and earned a total of 41 medals: 12 gold, 12 silver and 17 bronze, in sports ranging from archery to tennis.
Jim participated in Track and Field and came home with nine medals – six gold and three silver; six in individual events and three in team (relay) events.
As Track and Field is sanctioned by B.C. Athletics, results are included in their rankings and are also recognized by Canada Athletics. Jim’s results have him currently ranked number one in Canada in his age category (75-79) in three events: pentathlon, discus, and 1,500 metre racewalking; and third to eighth in five other events.
The pentathlon is comprised of five events over the course of a day: long jump, discus, javelin, 200 metre sprint, and 1,500 metre run. Points are awarded based on performance in each and totaled for a final result. Jim recently learned that the World Athletic rankings had him in fourth position in the pentathlon in 2025, and he is waiting to see if he managed to move up a notch in 2026.
Contributing to Jim’s efforts were Fred Clark, Jim’s original mentor; Tod Lunan, high jump coach; and Fitness, Inc.
Jim would like to thank our local sponsors for their financial support and he would invite all those over 55 to check out what the Games offer by going to the B.C. 55+ Games website.
Those interested could also attend the Zone 7 AGM on October 16, at 10 a.m., at the Seniors’ Hall in Cranbrook.
