Work to convert light standards begins soon
The City of Fernie is converting over 200 city-owned light standards into LED technology to improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs.
You can identify a city-owned streetlight by its decorative metal pole. Streetlights with wooden poles are owned by BC Hydro and were upgraded as part of a province-wide program between 2020-2023.
Contractors will begin replacing streetlights with LEDs in mid-November and are anticipated to wrap up in January 2027.
Once complete, the project is estimated to result in annual energy and replacement cost savings of $20,000.
