Police dog apprehends driver who fled accident scene
On June 12, just before 9 a.m., a plain-clothes RCMP officer came across a single vehicle crash on Hwy 95A between Kimberley and Marysville.
Witnesses observed a male flee the scene and head for the bush near Forest Crown. The officer requested the assistance of a police dog.
The police dog and his handler obtained a track and after almost two hours successfully located and arrested a 24-year-old male.
He was identified as the driver and has been charged with a number of offences under the Motor Vehicle Act, including Drive without Due Care and Attention, No Driver’s License and Fail to Remain at the scene of an accident.
Witnesses claim the driver attempted to pass several vehicles on a curve departing Kimberley, when a vehicle approached in the opposing lane; he pulled in, but lost control. The vehicle went off road right, clipped and broke a utility pole and then overturned.
There was also a passenger in the vehicle; fortunately neither of the subjects was injured.
The highway was closed initially while police searched for the subject, later it was opened to single lane alternating while BC Hydro repaired the damaged equipment.
