State of Emergency remains in Elkford; evacuation alert declared
The District of Elkford is maintaining the State of Local Emergency declared June 20 due to flooding in the area.
The Evacuation Order has been rescinded and an Evacuation Alert has been declared in its place. An Evacuation Alert means residents should remain alert to changing conditions and be prepared to leave immediately should an order be issued. Should an order be issued, officials for the district will attend to advise residents of the Order and direct you to the reception centre.
The Emergency Operation Centre will be open until 2 pm Saturday, June 22 and may re-open at 8 a.m. Sunday, June 23. Should you require assistance during these hours please call 250-865-4023 and after hours call 250-910-4004.
The Reception Centre is no longer open; however, residents impacted can contact Emergency Social Services at 250-603-9934.
Highway 43 through Elkford has been reopened to all traffic. Drivers are asked to drive slowly around the barriers near the small amount of water remaining on the road surface.
The Elk River continues to recede, but further rain may increase the flow. Residents are asked to stay away from the Elk River and Boivin Creek and to stay off the roads and trails north of town.
Business owners located on Front Street and Water Street (pictured above) are able to access their buildings but will not have use of sanitary sewer until further notice. Please use caution when entering.
Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines came to Elkford yesterday and toured the community and surrounding area.
