New principal for Amy Woodland School
School District No. 5 (SD5) Board of Education recently appointed Aaron Thorn as principal at Amy Woodland Elementary School in Cranbrook, on a one-year temporary basis following a leave-of-absence request by current principal, Steve Lightfoot.
Born in Prince George, Thorn moved to Cranbrook with his family at age 16. He has been an educator with SD5 for the past nine years and is currently the vice-principal at Gordon Terrace Elementary School.
Prior to becoming an educator, Thorn spent several years in food service management and credits this experience for his collaborative leadership style and focus on personal relationships.
“I enjoy working closely with others to create a positive working environment and strive to maintain solid relationships based on mutual trust and common goals.”
Thorn says he’s excited about the opportunity to work with staff, students and parents at Amy Woodland. “I look forward to working closely with the entire school community to ensure the continued success of students, programs and extra-curricular activities.”
Board chair Frank Lento says Thorn is a good fit for Amy Woodland. “Amy has a great team of teaching and support staff. I think they’ll welcome Aaron’s personal style of leadership.”
Thorn is also a community coach in Cranbrook and SD5 and has coached basketball, baseball, golf, track, soccer, and intramural sports over the past 10 years.
