Sign (ed), sealed and delivered

One of the most controversial bylaw processes a municipality can undertake – a signage bylaw – entered the City of Cranbrook’s books August 12 when council unanimously approved Bylaw No. 3773.

Approval, following numerous revisions over the past year and enormous input from the city’s business community, was followed by a round of applause from administrative staff. (Having covered municipal politics in this region since 1991, including a couple of sign bylaw processes, this reporter cannot recall a bylaw approval prompting the people who designed it to applaud.)

The sign bylaw will help make Cranbrook a more aesthetically pleasing city, suggested Mayor Wayne Stetski.

“It gives businesses maximum opportunity to chose the right signs for their properties,” he said, adding he encourages business owners to consider their signage and give them some “tender love and care.”
