A nine-hour standoff between RCMP and a lone male in a room in the Nomad Motel in Cranbrook yesterday (Oct. 30) ended with the male subject being taken to East Kootenay Regional Hospital for evaluation.  No charges are expected.

RCMP report that shortly before 9:30 p.m., a 48-year-old male exited the motel room and was taken into custody by police.  A police negotiator was able to make contact with the subject and successfully persuaded him to come out after a couple hours.  There was no injuries as a result of the incident.

Initially the emotionally distraught male made a call seeking assistance and transportation to the hospital.  However, upon police attendance he become apprehensive and non compliant. Due to the statements he made, police took action to ensure the safety of the subject and others.  The trained negotiator and officers on scene were sensitive to the subject’s state and responded accordingly to ensure a successful ending.

RCMP initially received a call about the male at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday. Police attended to assist and the male made comments that caused them concern as it affected public safety. Police sent up a perimeter, moved persons out of the area and attempted to make contact with the male inside. It is unknown if he has any weapons but police are taking precautions to ensure the safety of those in the area. The Highway 3/95 strip was closed during the standoff and traffic was routed around. Nearby businesses had to close.

Part way though the incident police learned of a house keeper in one of the nearby rooms.  She was asked to stay in the room.  Around 5 p.m. she was safely removed from the room.

Officers from Cranbrook were assisted by members from the surrounding area and traffic services.

The Nomad Motel is located in the 1000 block of Cranbrook Street North, which is Highway 3, the main road through Cranbrook.
