Barking Daisy Luthiery: new works by Kim Kennedy

Kim Kennedy holds a diploma in Performance and Merchandising from Red Deer College, and decided to learn the art of making stringed instruments, also known as Luthiery, after receiving a gift of an Appalachian Dulcimer.

A dulcimer is an instrument of the zither family, with the appearance of an elongated guitar. A self taught player, she began her journey into luthiery when she couldn’t find a dulcimer that was comfortable to play, after running into problems building her own, she turned to Timeless Instruments for help. In 2004 she received a certificate in luthiery from Timeless Instruments, and turned her attention to creating musical works of art under the name, Barking Daisy Luthiery.

An upcoming exhibition at Fernie’s The Art Station includes many of Kim’s most recent works, and offers a unique opportunity to experience the art of creating stringed instruments from concept to completion. Kim’s instruments are not the type of art form that the public gets to see often, and fall somewhere between the realms of art and function, it’s a must see exhibition, even if you don’t play music!

The exhibition, which runs August 28 to Sept. 22, will include an Appalachian dulcimer, a soprano ukulele, two steel string guitars, a classical guitar and a cigar box guitar and amplifier. These stunning works of art will be available to play at the opening, and Kim will be happy to answer any questions you have!

Please join Kim at her opening reception on Thursday, August 28 at 7 p.m. for refreshments.
