Elkford mayor elected acting chair of Hospital District

Kettle re-elected Hospital District chair

District of Elkford Mayor Dean McKerracher(left in photo above)  has been elected as acting chair of the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District (KERHD).

McKerracher was nominated for the position during the Feb. 3 KERHD board meeting by District of Sparwood Mayor Lois Halko. With no other nominations, he was named acting chair (same as vice chair).

The KERHD board also re-elected John Kettle as chair with District of Invermere Mayor Gerry Taft putting forth his nomination, which was uncontested.

This is the fifth term as chair for the Regional District of Central Kootenay Electoral Area B director, and he says he is looking forward to another busy year for the Hospital District. “We have a diverse board that works exceptionally well together. I am honoured to serve as chair for another term. I look forward to continuing to work on behalf of the entire Hospital District and to continuing to strengthen our working relationship with Interior Health.”

“I appreciate the board’s support in electing me. There are a number of items on our radar this year and I look forward to working with Chair Kettle and the board as we work through the issues and achieve positive results,” McKerracher said. This will be his first term as acting chair of the hospital board.

The two newly named executive board members opted to infuse some humour into a hospital board meeting – something rarely seen.

“You just put two pitbulls in,” Kettle told the board following the election.

McKerracher pointed out, “with the brains and the beauty we have together, we should be able to survive” and be effective.

The Kootenay East Regional Hospital District provides up to 40 percent capital funding for acute care facilities in the region for equipment and facility construction and renovation.

The Hospital District extends beyond the boundaries of the RDEK to include the Towns of Golden and Creston, and the portions of the Regional Districts of Central Kootenay and Columbia Shuswap surrounding those municipalities.
