Campaign underway to replace books lost in fire

Elkford’s Rocky Mountain Elementary School experienced a furnace/electrical fire in June. The resulting toxic gases and soot necessitated the removal and destruction of classrooms and library books.

The school has been taken down to metal studs and is in the process of being rebuilt. In the meantime seven classes have been temporarily placed in the Elkford Secondary School and three classes are in makeshift classrooms in the local Recreation Centre. The large banquet room has been divided into three classrooms by temporary walls.

While a temporary home has been found for the community’s elementary school students and their school is being brought back to safe standards for occupancy, the school needs books.

As a result a campaign is underway to help obtain books for the school via Indigo Love of Reading Foundation’s Adopt a School.

“All schools have some books…now we have none! Over 14,000 library books were lost and only a portion will be replaced, as well, our teachers lost all of their resources, and since so many belonged to them personally, they will not be replaced. In addition, all classroom books were lost. We need your help to replace all of these resources,” fundraising organizers state.

Help Elkford’s Rocky Mountain Elementary School rebuild by adopting (voting) the school for the next seven days (its free).

If they get the most adopts in the province they can win $10,000 in books from Indigo for their school library.

You can adopt once a day over the next seven days and it is free. You can also buy the school a book for $12 and that counts as 10 adopts.
