Fernie’s happening – literally

The  Fernie Writers’ Conference launched on Sunday, July 17, shortly after the conclusion of another Sunday Social on Victoria Avenue, as well as another packed Mountain Market.

The Victoria Avenue Summer Initiatives Committee,  a partnership of groups including the Fernie Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Fernie, the City of Fernie and the Arts Station, once again had several downtown blocks closed to traffic, with a variety of fun stations and things to do for kids and adults.

Some Victoria Ave. businesses are really digging into the event, creating colourful and fun attractions, while others are utilizing the day to hold sales and specials.

There weren’t large crowds flocking to Victoria Ave., which made for a wonderfully relaxed pace along Fernie’s lovely main street. However, a drop in attendance can be easily blamed on what could have been the finest day of summer thus far, as well as the other draws such as the Mountain Market, the Circus Gatti performing at the Fernie Arena and the approaching start of the fascinating Writers’ Conference.

Running through to July 24 (Sunday), the Writers’ Conference features daily courses and events, such as readings and performances buy a strong variety of great talents.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, July 20 has one of Canada’s most under-rated folk music talents, James Keelaghan conducting a song-writing course. Space is still available for his course. Go to ferniewriters.com for more information on the week-long event.

Fernie’s Summer Downtown Socials are being held every Sunday from July 3 to Sept. 4, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

For more information go to www.ourfernie.com or call the chamber of commerce at 250-423-6868.
