Small lightning-caused fire near Lumberton

A small fire is burning near Lumberton this morning (August 15) after a lightning strike during last night’s thunderstorm.

The B.C. Wildfire Service reports the fire is 2.1 hectares in size and is a smoldering ground fire. It is located on the south side of Highway 3, just before the turn to Lumberton, west of Cranbrook.

The Southeast Fire Centre is tending to the fire and no evacuation alerts have been put in place for the Lumberton/Cranbrook area. This fire is the only one of note in the East Kootenay at this time, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service.

The wildfire hazard rating for the southern interior ranges from high to extreme, with a Class 3 drought rating – one away from a full-on drought – currently in place in the Kootenays.
