Tourism industry favours second Monday of February for new holiday

B.C. is one of the few jurisdictions in North America to not have a statutory holiday in the month of February and the BC government is aiming to fix that anomaly.

From May 8 – 22 the province is holding a consultation to determine the day of the new annual BC Family Day holiday beginning Feb. 2013.

The options being considered are the third Monday of February, which is the same date holidays are held in other provinces and in the United States. Another option being suggested by the tourism industry and other business sectors is the second Monday of February.

“A strong representation of businesses and members of the tourism industry, including the ones involved in the ski resorts industry, have suggested that this holiday would rather be the second Monday of February. There is already a high volume of visitors coming to our region on the third weekend of February and ski resorts and other operations are mostly full at this time,” states an email from Tourism Radium, encouraging members to cast their votes.

“Having the BC Family Day on the second Monday of February would bring a better repartition of visitation in our region over the month of February and therefore, would permit increased business for our tourism industry on this new holiday,” Tourism Radium notes.

“Your vote can have a real impact of the future of the tourism industry.”
