A difficult goodbye at Fort Steele

It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of Duchess, one of our beloved Clydesdales. Duchess was born right here at Fort Steele Heritage Town and was a very special part of our site, our staff and our community.

After Duchess sustained an injury, our team worked closely with Tanglefoot Veterinary Services, Moore’s Equine Veterinary Services in Calgary, and our equine nutritionist over the past several weeks to provide care and explore every available treatment option.

We had hoped Duchess was improving following treatment, but unfortunately, she took a turn for the worse. After careful consideration and guidance from her veterinary care team, we made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize Duchess to prevent further suffering.

We are incredibly grateful to our Animal Care & Agricultural Supervisor and to the teams at Tanglefoot Veterinary Services, Moore’s Equine Veterinary Services, and our equine nutritionist for their care, expertise, and support throughout this process.

Duchess was deeply loved and will be missed by so many. Thank you to everyone who has shared their support and kindness with our staff.

If you have a favourite photo or memory of Duchess, we’d love for you to share it on our Facebook page as we remember a very special Fort Steele horse.
