Officer laid to rest
Police officers and emergency services personnel from across the province and nation are today gathering in Victoria for the funeral service of a 32-year-old RCMP officer killed in a traffic incident last week.
“Today is the Regimental Funeral for one of our fellow officers, Cst. Sarah Beckett, who was killed in the line of duty on Vancouver Island last week. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sarah, her family and co-workers as she is laid to rest today,” stated S/Sgt. Hector Lee of the Cranbrook RCMP Detachment.
The following is a synopsis of calls received by Cranbrook RCMP for the week (from 6 a.m.) April 4 to 6 a.m., April 11.
The detachment received 139 calls for service throughout that period.
Among the calls police handled:
One Immediate Roadside Prohibition issued (alcohol)/ One 24 hour prohibition (alcohol).
One vehicle impoundment – vehicle traveling 148 km/h in a 100 km/h area on Hwy 95A. Driver charged with excessive speed and had his vehicle impounded for seven days.
Six collisions – two were deer strikes on the highway; (reminder to the motoring public to be aware of wildlife on our highways).
10 Mental Health calls; two apprehended.
Six assault complaints; two domestic in nature.
Four thefts reported: one shoplifting/ one bicycle (there have been a few of these; reminder to the community to secure your property.)
Two Break and Enters reported – one was unfounded/ the other was to a rural property outside of Jaffray.
Four drug seizures – three marijuana seizures and one methamphetamine seizure (related to the news release last week regarding the recovery of stolen vehicles, firearm and possible explosive.)
