Al EBERT

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Al Ebert after a long arduous battle with Parkinson’s disease.  On December 19, 2020, he passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at the age of 74.

He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, father-in-law, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend.

Alfred William Ebert was born on July 29, 1946 in Fernie, BC to Max and Florence Ebert, the youngest of 4 children.  He grew up in Salmo, BC where he started his welding career and worked on numerous projects in the area. While working at Kootenay Lake he then met the love of his life, Judi.  The two moved to the beautiful Elk Valley in 1974, calling it home and starting a family.  Al was a skilled welder and fabricator, working all over the Elk Valley, including being a welding instructor at the college.  It’s a challenge to look around our community without seeing something that Al worked on.

Al was also an outdoorsman of the truest sense.  He spent much of his life hunting, fishing, and camping.  He loved spending time in the wilderness, hiking in the mountains of the Kootenays where he enjoyed so much of his time.  He also had an amazing love for animals, which was apparent in his daily life. Whether he was feeding the squirrels, birds or a stray neighborhood cat, or spending time with his favorite pal, his dog, who could always be found by his side.

He had a strong competitive spirit and would never give up on anything he did.  This showed in the work he did as well as the sports he did, whether it was boxing, raft racing, or building and crashing demolition derby cars.  This spirit also showed through in Al’s amazing fight to the very end.

Al was a devoted family man who loved his family dearly.  He was very proud of his kids and grandkids and adored his beloved wife Judi.

Predeceased by his parents, brother Mel and sister Maxine.

Al is survived, and will be deeply missed, by his loving wife Judi, children Nora (Brian), and Jason (Lacy), and three grandkids, Max, Simon and Jordyn, his sister Evelyn (Gene) Coulombe and a large extended family.  Lots of animals are also missing their daily treats.

We would like to thank Dr. Clark and the nursing staff at the Fernie Hospital for all the compassionate care that was provided in his final days.  We would also like to express our thanks for the care given to Al during his time spent at Rocky Mountain Village.

We kindly ask that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to Parkinson’s Canada, or plant a tree in our lovely mountains where Al spent so much of his time.  The mountains need it, and Al would like that.

A Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.
