Obituary for Gerhard “Gerry” Nowotny

Gerry NOWOTNY

February 22, 1928 ~ February 7, 2020 (age 91)

On Friday, February 7th our beloved father and grandfather, Gerhard “Gerry” Nowotny, passed away at the Elk Valley Hospital at the age of 91 years.

In October 1951, Gerry immigrated to Canada from Germany and settled in the small mining town of Natal, BC where he met and married his wife Ilse. They built their home in Sparwood and watched their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren grow.

Throughout his life, Gerry loved to tinker in his workshop, creating elaborate birdhouses, bowls and miscellaneous woodworking creations. He also loved his crosswords and music, and spent many hours working as the caretaker for the Senior’s Villa and the Senior’s Drop In Center. Gerry will be remembered for making the famous cream puffs that he shared with family and neighbourhood friends.

Best known as Opa, Gerry has left to cherish his memory his daughters: Rose (Russell) Zuffa, Susan White, and Marianne (Wayne) Mertens; his grandchildren: Jamie (Kyle) Zuffa-Kniert with their children Lukas and Morgan, Warren (Melissa) Zuffa with their son Tyson, Marlee (Ryan) Penner and their children Dorian and Finley, and his step-granddaughters, Danielle Morrison and Shenna Engle.

Gerry was predeceased by his wife Ilse (2002) and his son-in-law Keith White (2012).

The Nowotny family would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to the homecare staff and to the Elk Valley Hospital staff for their care and support.
