Obituary of Frances “Jean” GREY
Frances “Jean” GREY
Francis Jean (Jean or Jeannie) Grey (nee Pitt) passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Rocky Mountain Care Village on September 8th, 2026, in Fernie, BC.
She was born March 28th,1940, in Calgary AB.
Jean is survived by her son, Robert Grey (Holly Appleby); her grandchildren, Jennifer (Jonathan) Cawsey and Adam Grey; three precious great grandchildren: Jackson, Hannah, and Olivia Cawsey; her sisters, Lois (George) Zuffa and, Edna (Don) Koloff, as well as many nieces and nephews. Jean loved being known as GG when her great grandchildren were born.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jack (John) Grey in 1983, her parents, Edna Pitt and William Pitt.
Jean was raised in Calgary, Alberta. During the years there, she was a part of the farming community. Jean and her son, Rob, moved to Barbados to run the Colony Club Resort. Upon returning to Canada and retiring to Baynes Lake in 1978, Jack and Jean built their family home, which still stands at Baynes Lake today. While living in Baynes Lake, she participated in many community markets selling her bread, jam, and crafts. Summers were spent with her grandchildren on many adventures.
Jean is well known as Jeannie from “Creations by Jeannie.” Jean was also crafting and coming up with new ideas for her stained glass or crystal ice (a recipe for glass she never shared with anyone). Creations by Jeannie, run out of J.G. Glass, from 1982 as part of the family business with her son, until creating her own studio in her home. Jean had her own art studio for many years and was a part of the Fernie Art Co-op. Jean’s last stained-glass creation was of the Fernie Ghostrider for her granddaughter, in 2018 at age 78, with nearly 50 years in business!
Jean is also well known in the Guiding community. She served as a Guide and Pathfinder leader for nearly 50 years in Calgary, Fernie, and the South Country. She was well known for her night treks with the girls in the South Country area. Jean was also very active in the I.O.O.F and the Fernie Lions Community, largely involved in Demolition Derby preparations.
Jean never held a drivers license, but rode her bike everywhere she went, including the tunnels on highway 3, to go fishing. You would see her riding with her orange buggy whip around town or on a run with her granddaughter.
Thank you to the Rocky Mountain Care Village nursing staff that cared for Jean in her last years of life with Dementia. We know she kept you on your toes!
Rest in Peace, Jean (GG). Until we meet again.
