Obituary of Judy May HENDERSON

Judy May HENDERSON

April 5, 1955 ~ February 26, 2022 (age 66)

Judy May Henderson (nee Smith) passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer on February 26, 2022, at 6:38 p.m. She was born April 5, 1955, in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Judy is survived by her husband, David Henderson, happily married just shy of 43 years. She is also survived by her children, David, and Benjamin with his wife Ashley, her beautiful granddaughter, Abigail Judy, her sister Diane Sheppard, and niece Valerie Muir of Niagara Falls. Judy will be forever loved and missed by all her relatives and friends.

Judy and Dave were married in Niagara Falls on June 9, 1979, the hottest day on record and the last day Dave ever shaved. They celebrated life as newlyweds for 8 years, and then their dreams came true with the arrival of two sons within two years. The family moved from Niagara Falls to Ridgeway, ON, and 10 years later moved to Huntsville, ON.

Once the boys were older and headed west, Judy and Dave sold their house and belongings. They bought an RV and toured Canada from coast to coast, finally settling with their boys in Fernie BC. There they became travel enthusiasts which led to adventures in Mexico, Alaska, Las Vegas, Utah, Wyoming, and Hawaii spanning the following 10 years. They also enjoyed spending time exploring backroads in the old jeep with the top down, fishing in the rivers and creeks, and fine dining in the East Kootenays.

Judy enjoyed cruising around in the golf cart as the “caddy heckling specialist” with her daughter-in-law Ashley alongside her. She also loved having Ashley do her nails right before a trip, making sure to pick just the right colour for the destination. And when Judy had a new fruity cocktail that she was eager to try out, Ashley was the first one she would call to join her in a taste test.

Judy truly adored her new granddaughter Abigail and snuggled her every chance she could, wishing so much that she could watch her grow up and spoil her along the way. She enjoyed playing bingo with her bingo buddies, beating her whole family at cribbage, weekly calls with her sister Diane, and texting her niece Val. Her greatest pleasure in life was spending time with her precious family (David, David, Ben, Ashley, Abigail).

A celebration of life will be held at a later date with family and close friends.

The Henderson family would like to thank Dr. Ashley Bakker, Fernie Palliative Care, Interior Health, and the staff at the Elk Valley hospital for their incredible support, compassion, and medical care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fernie Palliative Care.
