Obituary of Luigi Batti
Luigi Batti
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Luigi Batti on October 3, 2026.
Luigi was born on February 11, 1937, in Sambasso, Slovenia. In 1962, he moved to Careri, Calabria, Italy, where he met his future wife, Carmela Batti (née Rossi). Luigi and Carmela were married on June 2, 1963, and moved to Aosta, Italy, where they lived for six years. In 1969, they came to Cranbrook, British Columbia, along with many of Carmela’s brothers and her sister, in search of a better life and new opportunities.
Luigi was a proud bricklayer who took great pride in his work. His craftsmanship can be seen inside and outside many homes throughout Cranbrook, leaving a lasting mark on the community he called home.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed a successful career in bocce throughout the Kootenays. Luigi was also a dedicated member of the Cristoforo Colombo Lodge, where he was a member for more than 50 years.
Carmela and the family on behalf of Luigi would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Commare Antonietta Sacino, Dawn and Mario Marone, and Eric and Donna Olson for their help and assistance with Luigi, the house, and the yard work. Their kindness and support were deeply appreciated.
Luigi is survived by his beloved wife, Carmela Batti; son Tony Batti; daughter Maria Batti; daughter-in-law Liisa Batti; son-in-law Saverio Zappavigna; and grandchildren Bruno Zappavigna, Xavier Batti, and Marcus Batti.
He will also be lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews, spanning Japan, Australia, Italy, the former Yugoslavia, the United States, and across Canada.
A Viewing will be held on Friday October 16, at 7:00pm at McPherson Funeral Services in Cranbrook, British Columbia.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30am on Saturday October 17, 2026 at Christ the Servant Parish, also in Cranbrook.
Luigi will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
