Obituary of Michael Ortynski
Michael “Mike” Ortynski
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael “Mike” Ortynski on June 16, 2026 in Cranbrook B.C. after a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 63 years old.
Mike was predeceased by his loving parents, Delores (Dode) and Ed Ortynski, along with his brother Darryl and his in-laws Melvin and Mabel Beck.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Phyllis; his children, Daniel (Jillian), Jennifer (Evrhetton), and Jason (Cheryl); and his cherished grandchildren, Madalynn, Nash, Hannah, Thatcher, and Sadie, who brought immense joy and pride to his life. Mike is also survived by his brothers Duane (Edith), Meldon (Janice), Dave (Lorna), his sister Genelle, and many loved nieces and nephews.
Mike found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. His perfect day was one spent on the lake with a fishing rod in hand, surrounded by family and friends. His love of fishing, camping, and being on the boat was contagious. Many special moments were spent teaching and sharing that passion with his kids and his grandchildren. Whether he was camping, waterskiing, skiing, or gathered around a table playing cards, Mike embraced every opportunity to make memories with those he loved.
One of Mike’s greatest gifts was his ability to make people feel welcome. He never met a stranger and went out of his way to put others at ease and make them laugh. His kindness, warmth, and easy going nature left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Mike will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched. Though his absence leaves a tremendous void, his family will continue to honour his memory by spending time together doing the things he loved most—camping, fishing, boating—ensuring that his legacy lives on for generations to come.
A Celebration of Life for Mike will be held on Thursday, June 25th, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at the Kimberley Conference Centre. A luncheon will follow immediately after the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fort Steele Cemetery Society.
