Howitzers testing Nov. 4 to 7 in Rogers Pass

Parks Canada (Mountain Safety) has issued an important notice for Rogers Pass backcountry users.

From November 4-7, the East Rogers area will be closed in order for Parks Canada and the Canadian Armed Forces to test the howitzers (similar to a cannon) used for avalanche control in Rogers Pass.

Intermittent closures on the Trans-Canada Highway will be required while these operations are underway. Before you travel, check DriveBC for details.

Called a verification shoot, this drill ensures the 105 mm howitzers are firing accurately to protect the highway corridor from avalanches in winter.

Reminder! This program protects highway and railway traffic from natural avalanches. It does NOT make slopes safe for skiers or snowboarders.

All backcountry users must comply with the Winter Permit System through Parks Canada.
