Obituary of Reinhard WIENS

Reinhard WIENS

September 12, 1959 ~ February 21, 2021 (age 61)

With tremendous sadness we announce the sudden death of Reinhard Wiens who passed away on February 21st at the age of 61.

Reinhard is survived by his partner, Susan Grover, of Fernie, BC, and by his brother Ed Wiens, sister-in-law Debbie Wiens, and nephews Andrew and Matthew, all of Edmonton, AB. He was predeceased by his mother, Helene Wiens (d. 2010), and father, Bernhard Wiens (d. 2007).

Reinhard finished Southern Okanagan Secondary School in 1977, and then went on to complete a heavy equipment program in Trail, BC that led to his 25+ year career as a coal miner in the Elk Valley. Afterwards, Reinhard’s vast knowledge of mining was used to create his own mining training consulting business where he sent out trainers and travelled throughout the world on international contracts.

He enjoyed hunting and the outdoors and for a few years operated a small outfitting company taking clients to the Elk Valley wilderness on horseback. Reinhard loved horses, and from his ranch offered wagon and sleigh rides pulled by his heavy horses. He also took great pride in his Harley Davidson motorcycles.

Reinhard was musically talented, playing violin early on, then, after finding his lifelong, favourite instrument, the guitar, played in a rock band in the 1970s – later finding interest in sound engineering and songwriting. He loved playing guitar at jam sessions at pubs and bars during open mic nights and playing music with his brother during their many visits.

He left everyone who loved him too soon and will be sorely missed.
