Salvatore “Sam” CARAVETTA

Sam will be remembered by his three sons: Mark Caravetta, Gerard Caravetta, and Paul Caravetta; his daughter-in-law’s, (Anissa Haarstad) (Jennifer Phillips) (Tamara Egan); his grandchildren, Payton Caravetta, Jordyn Caravetta, Drayana Caravetta, and Kimber Caravetta; his step-grandchildren, Viola Egan Barrett and Frank Egan Barrett; and his nephew, Joe Caravetta, and his family.

Sam was predeceased by his wife, Elsa Caravetta; his parents, Concetta, and Giuseppe Caravetta; his two brothers, Frank Caravetta and Patsy Caravetta; his niece, Connie Bouvier; his daughter-in-law, Jen Hickling; and his sister-in-law, Irene Caravetta, wife of Frank. He was also predeceased by numerous dear friends from years gone by. We take comfort in knowing he is now reunited with those he loved and cherished, while the memories they shared will forever remain a part of his family’s hearts.

Sam was a proud lifelong resident of Fernie and a man who found great joy in the simple things in life. He graduated from Fernie Secondary School, and, in his younger years, he played senior hockey for the Fernie Rangers alongside his brothers. Sam worked in Calgary, Alberta, at the brewery before beginning a 30- year career with the Fernie Highway Department, where he worked in the warehouse as a stockman before retiring in his 50s.

Sam also shared his knowledge and passion for the outdoors. He taught the CORE course as an instructor and was a lifelong member of the Fernie Rod and Gun Club. Sam could throw a mean horseshoe, which is where he met his wife Elsa at a Coal Creek picnic.

Sam loved fishing, sheep hunting, huckleberry picking, tying flies, and fixing fly rods. He enjoyed his daily walk with his brother Patsy, riding his bike around town, gardening, and his regular coffee visits with friends at McDonald’s. He had a special love for dogs and was known for his loyalty to the Catholic Church, faithfully attending Mass every Sunday. Above all, Sam treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren, creating memories that they will carry with them for years to come.

Serving as honorary pallbearers are Sam’s sons Mark Caravetta, Gerard Caravetta, and Paul Caravetta; his grandchildren, Payton Caravetta, Jordyn Caravetta, Drayana Caravetta, and Kimber Caravetta; his nephew, Joe Caravetta; his godsons, Jerome Salvador, and Bob Cherney; and his dear friend, Tony Reno. Each held a special place in Sam’s heart, and it is fitting that they be honoured in this way as a reflection of the lasting bond they shared with Sam.

The family would also like to extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported and cared for Sam throughout his life, especially during his final years. We are deeply grateful to his doctors, healthcare providers, friends, family, neighbours, and all those who offered their time, kindness, companionship, and support.
