Steamboat Music Fest features family fare

Who’s on first? Guest artist and renowned family performer Rick Scott will open the show at Edgewater’s Steamboat Mountain Music Festival.

Steamboat 1 Rick ScottHis infectious good humour appeals to all age groups and breaks the face of the grimmest grouch into a smile. Rick plays a magical dulcimer that he refers to as an electric snowshoe. He sings songs and tells stories with a goofy sincerity that tickles the funny bone and warms the heart. Even his monsters are funny. Rick’s performance begins at noon on Saturday, July 5.

The Amuse Troup is back by popular demand. Last summer they brought their festive frivolities to Steamboat, and this summer they will be clowning around the grounds again with tricks and stunts, stilts and hoops, juggling balls and pins, and acrobatic antics. This cirque-improv company from Golden has been building up a well-deserved reputation for amusing and amazing audiences all around the region.

Steamboat 2 kidszoneArts and crafts, face painting, conservation and science activities, and other fun booths will keep children engaged in the ‘Festival Kid Zone.’ Local favourite Balloon Man Bob will be creating his colourful and whimsical balloon animals.

Yamaha Music will have a display of some musical instruments and accessories, and information about rentals for interested families. Children who learn to play music often learn everything more readily and do better in school. Music is fun and opens channels to sound patterns and creative thinking. Even if they do not go on in music professionally, children who study music gain understanding and appreciation that will bring them joy and pleasure for a lifetime.

For the second year, the festival is raffling a beautiful guitar donated by one of our sponsors Yamaha Music. This fine A1R acoustic/electric guitar is valued at worth $1,200. Not necessarily a beginner’s guitar, this would be a great instrument for someone who is hoping to grow and develop as a musician. Tickets are $5 or three for $10. Proceeds benefit the 2015 Steamboat Festival.

There will be a CD sales table displaying all the albums of our festival artists, as well as the compilation disk of Valley Musicians Who Care and recent Valley Voices concerts.

Silent auction and 50/50 draws will also be dedicated to raising money for the Steamboat Mountain Music Society Bursary Fund. Each year, the society offers an award to Columbia Valley musicians of any age who wish to pursue music courses or workshops to develop their skills. Applications are linked through the website, and deadline for submission is September 30. The award is announced at the end of October.

Edgewater Elementary School field is the festival’s scenic venue with its vistas of the Columbia Wetlands and beloved local landmark Steamboat Mountain. Tickets are available at many community outlets: Pip’s Country Store in Edgewater, Essentials, and Bliss in Invermere, Meet on Higher Ground Cafés in Windermere and in Radium, and Fairmont Village Gifts.

On-line PayPal tickets are linked through the website. Full program details and additional information about the festival is posted there as well: www.steamboatmtnmusicfest.ca
