Cherry Lake wildfire now fire of note

A lightning-caused wildfire northwest of Cherry Lake has grown to about 1,000 hectares in size, according to the BC Wildfire Service, which has upgraded its status to being ā€˜A fire of note.ā€™

Discovered Tuesday, August 25, the fire about 35 km southeast of Cranbrook, is currently zero per cent contained.

ā€œThis fire has quickly grown due to wind and dry forest conditions. This fire is not threatening any structures or communities,ā€ BC Wildfire Service reported in an update this morning (August 28).

As city residents know, there is plenty of aerial action taking place in the fight to contain the fire, with six helicopters engaged along with seven pieces of heavy equipment and 43 firefighters.

Another fire that started on August 25 east of Yahk at Mahon Creek has grown to about 1.7 ha.

Two other small fires nearby have been extinguished.
