City honours gold medalist

The City of Cranbrook Nov. 3 honoured a resident who was a recent gold medalist at the World Karate and Kickboxing Commission World Championship, held in Dublin, Ireland.

Cran TysonHMayor Wayne Stetski and council introduced 18-year-old Tyson Hirscher before the start of their regular meeting Monday night and presented him with a gift on behalf of city residents.

The mayor said Hirscher is an example of the many “amazing youth” in the city.

“You are an inspiration to others,” Coun. Sharon Cross said to Hirscher, who won gold in the Light Contact Junior Boys 16-17 (70+ kg). He only recently turned 18.

Hirscher, who admitted to being nervous about being before the council chamber audience, humbly admitted he only had to beat one fighter, fellow Canadian
 Spencer Cunningham, to claim gold.

He also said he had a great experience in Ireland, noting “culture shock” from observing so many people smoking. “They like to fight over there,” he smiled.

Departing council chambers following a photo shoot, where he showed his gold medal, the amiable young man exclaimed, “See you guys!”
